Star on a Roll....

Star is so predictable, as most horses are. Tonight after her ride and her bath, she rolled. She always does. Same spot. Every time. So I did a little research and found some interesting things about horses and rolling:
  • horses return to the same rolling spot every time they roll.
  • it is a stimulating behavior like yawning in humans...ie, one rolling horse in a herd will cause another horse to drop and roll.
  • The top or head male in the herd always rolls last...yes really.
  • horses will roll in the same order day after day...like a pecking order.
She has to smell to find just the right spot...then she scratches the ground with one hoof...then down she goes...always in the grass and never the dirt. Oh yeah, she's going down, knees bend, front legs first, then head to the side, face first....

There is an old wives tale, that goes like this; however many times a horse can roll over, dicatates how much it's worth...$100 for each full roll over...tonight, Star was a $300 horse.
One good dirty look for the camera...it wouldn't be Star without one!
