One Spring Day...

It's hard to believe a month ago, we had this to deal with...a BLIZZARD literally.
Today we spent all afternoon and evening working in the yard. I surveyed the flowerbed out front to see what survived the frigid 18 degrees below zero wind chill. We groomed horses...picked up rocks in the pasture...plowed the arena, and spread lime on the south side of the pasture for upcoming grass seed. I snapped a few pics of today's activities.
If I walk to the very back of our property line to the fence, this is on the other side. It's a winter wheat field. It belongs to the farmer in that teeny cute little yellow farmhouse. This is my favorite time of year here...I love driving around and seeing winter wheat in every direction...bright, bright green. These pictures do not even do the color justice. Everything else is brown...the trees that bloom on the wood are just beginning to bloom..the Bradford Pears and Cherry Blossoms, and then there is the wheat.
After it grows and turns brown.. like wheat...the "waving wheat kind"....the farmer will bale it into round bales to sell and feed his cows all winter. Some farmers put their cows on winter wheat to eat and graze while it is short, then take them off in early Summer.

This is probably a truer representation of the color. On a day when the sky is bright blue...and the wheat is bright green...it's truly stunning.

We have hardly any grass peeking up at all in our pastures, so we are still feeding hay. Star is longingly looking at the wheat and don't you just know what she's thinking..."if I could just have 5 minutes..."

Maddie was not as excited about being held over the fence to see the wheat!

Because of the coyotes...and neighborhood dogs, Maddie still is only allowed outside when we are supervising her. She's not really happy about it, especially as the days get longer and warmer. When we don't let her out when she wants out, she pitches a feline tantrum, tearing through the house, up the stairs and knocking stuff down in H's room. Naughty cat.

She's a little out of her element...no bushes to hide behind...no trees to climb...just wide opened spaces. I think she's still in shock at how vast it is.

Contrary to what people believe, horses don't just lay down when it's going to rain. Star takes about two lay down naps a day that last about an hour. This is her morning one. :)
And she ALWAYS rolls over before she gets up. Come to think of it, so do I . I think it's like an equivalent to us stretching.

Again, so thankful for a wonderful day...this is how it started out above...and it ended nice too!
