In Search of a Solution: Gripe #2/Bathing Suit Ads

OK, so I had an epiphany this morning at Sonic; it is indeed almost bathing suit and pool season. So, as I was polishing off my Breakfast Bistro sandwich and cancelling it out with a diet coke, I realized I had a Land's End catalog (from yesterday's junk mail) in the seat beside me. So, I flipped it open to the page that had the style suit I purchased last year...it's pretty cool actually, you just pick your problem spot and it tells you which style to pick to combat that; only for me, they don't make a suit that encompasses your entire body. Anyway, check out the picture to the right...it just rubbed me the wrong way, I mean come on... right beside her it says "Slender Suits. Who would have thought you could actually look smaller in a swimsuit". OK, first off, the chick is like a 1, so a size smaller would make her a zero, or at best invisible. Take a look at her thighs...you could drive a Mack Truck between her legs. I mean come on; honestly; what percentage of the population has this wide a gap between their inner thighs...I personally have had friction between my thighs since junior high! So anyway, why couldn't the catalog layout designer person put say, a size 14 model on the page and show us how she'd look in a 12, or a 16 in a 14...not this chick. It just irritated the snot out of me... and the media wonders if they have anything to do with the number of kids dealing with eating disorders! So anyway, I'll be ordering the same style of bathing suit again this year, thankfully in the same size (not one smaller like I wanted), but at least not one size larger! I will say also, that I tried Eddie Bauer's Miracle Suit last year...and let me just tell you...Miracle Suit for me it was not! It supposedly takes 10 pounds off you...and it did...my torso anyway, because it pinched the snot out of me; when I told one of my sister's about the Miracle Suit and that I was going to try it, she asked me what happened to the rest of you hanging out of the suit..your arms and legs? It looked awful on me. It was no miracle at all! Any other bathing suit woes out there? Any suggestions?

You crack me up! I love your take on things and am so happy that you have a blog.

You are right...that ad is horrible. Why wouldn't they pick a bigger model? I mean this model would want to be in a bikini and wouldn't need a slender suit.

Any bathing suit is a problem for me! I hate all of the them. Oh, well!

I think that suit is pretty cute. :) I'm gonna check out the Land's End website today. Yes, they for sure could have picked a more average size woman to model the "slender suit". I can say that no matter your size, it is HARD to find a bathing suit. :) Especially since I have NOTHING up top to hold ANYTHING up, even the padded kind. Ha ha ha! :)

Ok Candy, you'd look cute in that suit...you're actually about her size and also, Lands End has UNDERWIRE tops...the only reason I can wear them. The underwire's must be made of titanium, because they hold me up!

Oh, and if it doesn't fit, you can take it back to Sears to return it.

I am not digging the girl in the mag either. When it comes to swimsuits I'm going to give you the words I live by "WRAP ALWAYS HAVE A WRAP"

I'm totally with you on this one!! I hate looking at ads like this!!
I'm NOT looking forward to bathing suit time!! No way!
That is good to know that you can take them back to Sears--how convenient. I might try them this year.

I'm officially depressed now.

I love, well not love, but prefer the tankinis with the shorts.

That is quite the gap between her legs there - yikes! I'm with you Kelly, got the friction - I think I could start a fire with my thighs.
I thought I would escape the bathing suit deal with being in cooler weather - but the girls and I are running away for a week to spain to find sunshine - with that comes the beach - Going with the Tankini & the Wrap!!! The only way the miracle suit would work for me is if God himself made it for me.

You are hillarious and I completely agree with you! Definitely have the friction thing going on too. I showed Dave your blog and the picture of the swimsuit model and of course, he didn't see a problem with it!
