Time to ride...this horse is used to work. He's had a job roping cattle and penning them. He follows his rider. No halter necessary. Walking past all this grass was extremely tempting...like walking through a field of snicker bars. Once Hannah went in the tack room, and the rider was gone, the head went down to eat. Good boy.
"My ears are up and forward...I'm listening"....
Back in the saddle. Cinch has no idea what a pole is, much less that he's suppose to jump over it, so Hannah started trotting him over them flat. He did OK, considering he's never seen one before.
Sidepassing.....tapping your heels at a certain place on the horse's side and his feet cross over and he walks sideways/horizontal instead of forward. Comes in handy opening gates and closing them, etc..
Cinch neck reigns only. It's like steering a car. So he's a power steering horse. Neck reigning is the cue that tells the horse which way to turn. Neck reigning uses a loose, indirect reign across the horses neck to encourage the horse to move away from the pressure. Both reigns are held loose in one hand, and you hold your hand just above the pommel. (the raised area at the front of the saddle.)
Hannah's trying to get him to do a sliding stop. She accidentally got him to do one yesterday, and she's intentionally trying to get him to do one here, so she can show Lora. (behind her). It's one of the hardest maneuvers a horse and rider do well, so Hannah obviously is just playing around and has a long way to go, but a sliding stop involves stopping from a lope. The horse brings both hind legs up under himself with front legs straight and parallel. You can see from the picture, that she's giving him the right cues, because his front feet are in the right position. She wasn't going fast enough to beginning with before she started the stop. It's fun to watch though. It's nice to know that if she had to stop all the sudden, she could.
Mainly, it's just fun to watch her ride and smile and enjoy herself again. She's missed that. So have I. Whens the last time you did something you really enjoy?
