God's sense of humor...

My question is, do you think that God truly has a sense of humor? Does he laugh? Is he funny? What do you think? I have always thought that he smiles...I learned that in my study of the "Purpose Driven Life". I try to make God smile daily and encourage Hannah to do the same. So do you think God would desire us to smile...to be funny...to act silly on occasion, to have a sense of humor? I think so, and I'll tell you why in a minute. Have you met people before that are just way to serious...they never laugh and cut up, their sense of humor (if they have one) is very dry.."come on, laugh would ya"? Christians can laugh my friends...life is sad, but it's funny too. God created it that way. He speaks to me through nature DAILY! (in case you can't tell from this blog).

One particular day, when I was taking life way too seriously, I discovered that God does indeed have a fabulous sense of humor and he does truly want us to laugh at life as often as possible. Case in point: "The Dung-Beetle". See the pictures above. So I was walking the dog and contemplating why there were suddenly (overnight) these piles of dirt on one side of our driveway where the dog goes potty. First I thought I might blame it on my neighbors...perhaps they felt the poop needed to be covered with dirt...not sure. Anyway, as I'm standing there looking at these piles of dirt, I kick one with my shoe, only to discover that there is no poop underneath...the case of the missing poop. Becoming more intrigued by the minute, I see that one pile of dirt is moving from the bottom. Something was under there, a mole perhaps. Suddenly, I see a flash of green and out from the dirt pops this little guy in the picture. Meet the "dung-beetle".
God created this little guy to show us that he has a sense of humor....because, the dung beetle is amazing. He bores up through the ground, with his perfect sense of smell and comes above ground near poop piles (in our case dogs but it can be horse, cow etc...). He takes the poop, and with his hind legs, he rolls it into a ball. He then rolls over and under it and rolls the ball of poop into the hole for the female, where she lays her eggs. The funny part (as if this is not funny enough) is that the dung beetles do a mating dance that consists of the female getting on the "dung/poop ball" and doing a little dance while rolling the poop ball around. The male dung beetle, if he is impressed by her fabulous dance moves, will mate with her and she lays her eggs in the poop. Now I researched this after seeing it in my yard, and while you all may be thinking that I have entirely too much time on my hands, I have to ask, is this not incredibly fascinating? Doesn't it make you look at God in a different light...as a funny guy, because that's the kind of detail creator he'd have to be to make such a peculiar critter with such funny behavior. Below are some of the things the Bible has to say about laughter...

  • Proverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

  • Genesis 21:6 And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.”

  • Ecclesiastes 7:3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.

  • Psalm 2:4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.

  • Proverbs 14:13 Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief.

  • Psalm 37:13 But the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming

  • Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.

  • Psalm 126:2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”

Have a great weekend and laugh! See you at the crop tonight! bring food!

So funny!! I've always thought of God as having a sense of humor--you just confirmed it!

I love this! You are definitely right about God having a sense of humor! That beetle is proof enough for me. I've never noticed any in our yard but I'm gonna have to go investigate Buster's bombs...

Thanks for the passages on laughter, they're great! Have you ever considered writing a devotional book? Just a thought...

I'm glad to see somebody agrees with me about your talent for writing! God could use you in this area!! You're good at relating real life incidents that most people overlook to life lessons from God's word.

By the way, I met another friend at Chloe's ballet that I have tried to enlist as a prospective member of Trinity. Pray for her-she's from Romania and is going through a divorce. I don't relate to her as well as I did you, but it's funny how God uses ballet class for me to meet people! If I were you I could think of a cool story to go along with it all!:)
