The Truth about Horse Teeth....

You know, deep down, you really, really want to know all about horse teeth. Admit it. You have always been curious. I never knew anything about horse teeth before I owned horses...when I was a kid, people would say I eat "like a horse" but beyond that, I had no horse digestion knowledge. Today was Cinch's first visit with the equine dentist.  He did very, very well, and UNLIKE Star, he did not have to be sedated. Once they put the metal clamp thing in their mouth that clamps their jaw OPEN, they are rather in shock, so they don't move around much, unless they have just awful manners.  Cinch had one tooth that had to be pulled, called a Wolf tooth. This is a picture of Audie, or equine dentist, pulling Cinch's tooth.{ And FYI, they don't numb horses when they pull wolf teeth}. In an aged horse, wolf teeth are easier to pull he said. It took about 2 minutes.

What's a wolf tooth? Wolf teeth are small peg-like teeth that sit just in front of the first cheek teeth of horses. If the horse gets any at all (this varies), is a sharp little pointy thing.they are usually removed as they are often sharp, and because of the bit, they can cause problems in the modern sports horse.  After he pulled the wolf tooth, he started the filing. Horses teeth continue to grow through their life, and they have to be filed down so that they can grind their feed and grass. See the first pictures on this post for how the horse's teeth grow. They can actually get painful hooks and points on them that can prevent them from chewing and digesting their food.

I asked Hannah if she wanted to put this tooth under her pillow, and see what she got and she looked at me like I was crazy. The tooth part is on the left by the arrow end, and the root is the white part on the right. Ouch is all I can say. Cinch was such a good boy, but by the end of it, he was OVER IT and ready to be done. When I put him back in the pasture, he winnied to Star and started trotting to her, as if to say "you won't believe what they let him do to me!"
