It's finally over. Tonsils and Adenoids were removed Thursday in an outpatient surgery. Hannah was a great patient. She was scared of course, but after and IV injection of Versed (a quick acting, and short lived narcotic), she could've cared less what they did to her. The picture with the silly smile and the cap on...just of her face is after the Versed...see how goofy? I could've used some of that myself. I almost passed out afterwards...more on that later. Anyway, the surgery was uneventful and the recovery is going to take a couple of weeks. Her throat is raw to say the least. I looked at it yesterday and ouch is all I can say. Dr. Beal gave her two pints of Loratab and Phenergan with 11 refills, so I left expecting the worst...but it hasn't been terribly bad for her. We gave her a bell to ring, as she's not talking, and every six hours she rings it for her pain medication, which I quickly dispense. I'm enjoying being a nurse again! Who wouldn't be thrilled to have unlimited ice cream, slushes, milkshakes and pushpops at their disposal? That is the ONLY upside.
I want to clarify that the picture taking that was going on in the operating room was requested by Hannah at her pre-op appointment. She was very clear that she wanted documentation of her tonsils. So I handed the camera over to a very handsome nurse and he took the liberty of taking some really great pictures of the experience. For those of you who always wanted to know what tonsils look like....you'll be thrilled to see pictures of them, and adenoids. For the rest of you...sorry! Yes, the tonsils are rather large. On the side view, it kinda looks like a chicken thigh, don't you think?

One of the pictures is upside down, the tonsils actually lay left and right and the adenoid/or "lesser or upper tonsil" is above them. So if you turn the photo upside down, that's actually how they are in the throat. In one picture, if you look close, you can see these little "nipple looking things" sticking up on top...kinda looks like those things that stick up on the top of cartoon martian heads...not sure if this is normal or not, but it's really strange looking. What was God thinking when he made tonsils anyway? If we can live without them and they cause so much havoc, why include them at all? Hmmm. Just pondering.
You'll see that Cynthia got to go to surgery as well. She was decked out in a fancy sweater, white mini-skirt and high hill sequined shoes. I think she mis-read the invitation...this was not a party...nonetheless, she was taken to surgery and the guys took liberties with giving her her very own surgical cap and mask. It think it was great of them to do that, and when Hannah woke up Cynthia was right there beside her.
Before, during and after surgery, we had 5 visitors from church and 7 other contacts from church members and friends, either by email or phone. All calling and coming by to see if all was well, to pray with us and for Hannah, and to check on her. We are so blessed to have such a caring church family that is there for us. Hannah had fudgesicles delivered by Lauren and her girls and a special surprise visit from Jake Mize. He brought Hannah a dozen yellow roses and a huge Icee. She was beaming from ear to ear, and it was the first time she got out of the recliner in 5 hours, was to see Jake. He's been sweet on her for a while, but his visit was top secret and he told Hannah to NOT tell anyone he brought her flowers. So don't mention it to either of them. Apparently, their romance is under wraps or something.
Well, we're off to see Beverly Hills Chihuahua and pass the afternoon. Have a great weekend!

I really wanted to read the rest of the post but I can't b/c I don't want to see the tonsils. That is really cool though. Did she get to keep them in a jar? I guess it has been a week or two since I've read your blog. I've had 2 sick kids of my own. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
Oh come on Kristy! They're not bloody, it looks like chicken!
Glad to hear that everything went well. That's too cute about Hannah and Jake. But the pictures of the tonsils are kinda gross!
I think the pictures are cool!!! I do have to change my plans of having chicken for dinner tonight though.
How sweet of Jake to bring her flowers. Young love - awwww. At least he's from a good family! Too cute - the picture of them is defiantly a keeper.
Glad she is doing so well - enjoy the special time you have together!
First of all, I was glad to see the doll right along with her...and how sweet of them to give her a surgical mask!
Her tonsils DO look like chicken. Cool pictures! Did she keep them? Talk about a good show and tell!
What a cutie, that Jake!
Send Hannah a "Hello and feel better soon" from me! :) She's got a good nurse!
No, the tonsils went to pathology to be biopsied...I would NOT have brought them home. I draw the line at pictures on my blog!
Oh come on now Kelly...what's a little "chicken" brought home? So...did you enjoy Beverly Hills Chihuahua?
It was really funny, although there was no icee and they burnt my pretzel. Other than that, we enjoyed it. :-)
Oh my goodness Kelly. I saw this post the other day, but didn't have a chance to post a comment.
I'm so glad Hannah did well. I kept thinking about her since I knew she wasn't at school that day.
Did I tell you on my phone message (hmmm hmmm, did you get it?) that Seth is having or should I say supposed to have his out on the 30th, the day after his birthday? I'm SO chicken for him to do this. I'm doing it myself soon too, but I'm not worried about me and they say it will be lots worse. Oh well, that's they way it goes when you're a mother right?
I'm glad you posted pics.I agree about that and the appendix (and the gallbladder maybe) why have them at all?
Anyway, like I said, I'm VERY nervous. Can you tell.
